University of New Mexico Women's Basketball Games
Joe Behrend is no stranger to play-by-play sports broadcasting in New Mexico. Behrend has been named New Mexico Play-by-Play Sportscaster of the Year three times by the New Mexico Broadcasters Association (1997, 1998, and 2006). He has been calling University of New Mexico women's basketball games on a continuous basis since the 2002-2003 season on Sports Radio 610. Behrend has done college football, basketball, and baseball play-by-play at various points in his sports broadcasting career which began in 1981 as he did college football and men’s basketball play-by-play for Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The first college football game he called was from Kezar Stadium on November 21, 1981 as Oregon Tech played the University of San Francisco.
Behrend also hosted a morning sports show while working for KFLS in Klamath Falls, OR during his two-year stint there. He went on to graduate from the University of Arizona in 1985 with a degree in Radio and TV, and a minor in business. Joe has been an active figure on the New Mexico sports scene since 1989.He served as a spotter for long time Lobo broadcaster Mike Roberts during the 1989 UNM football season. Only a few months later Behrend went on to begin his own broadcasting career in New Mexico doing play-by-play for former Lobo and NFL player Randy Rich at KLYT radio. In addition to his work calling Lobo women's games, he has also called a number of UNM men’s basketball and baseball games over the years. He has co-hosted UNM football pre-game shows for News Radio 770 KKOB. He has also called numerous high school football, basketball, and baseball games in New Mexico. His sports broadcasting career doing play-by-play now spans over 20 years while working at stations in South Dakota, Minnesota, Oregon, Arizona, and New Mexico. A native of Parkston, South Dakota, Joe lives in Albuquerque with his daughter, Maria.
